I’m looking to refinish my bedroom dressers and nightstand. My plan is on plugging the holes left from the old hardware, sanding off the current finish, drilling new holes for the new hardware, and restaining it. What types of finsih should i look at? I want it to be black, but dont know what types of stain i should use and if i need to polyurthene it as well.

spanish oak is a good color and old masters is a good brand if you want it black. i would leave it on for a while too before you wipe to get the darkest color possible. As for the poly urthene yes you will want to use either that or laquer to ensure the finish stays in good condition. Stain on bare wood scratches easier. Also if you wnat black you could consider using enamel. I mean i dont know the look your going for but if you go for enamel make sure you use the oil product, latex enamel is crap. Any representative at a paint store i.e. sherwin williams, will be able to tell you the best products to use. they dont carry old masters brand stain there though just fyi , good luck

You can refinish it any way you’d like to. If you want a set black you can use black paint to paint it with, if you want the woody look to it yet you can use a black stain. Anything you do you will want to poly it to protect it.

We just put in a large house that needed to be moved and re-did the entire living space. For my bedroom furniture I picked up a dresser and headboard, and used the shelves and mirrors i already had and painted them then polyed the heck out of them so they stay the way I painted them.

Here are some pics of what I did if you are interested in looking at them. If you scroll down to the next blog you can see the rest of the house, just don’t mind how crappy we look, we were working 15 hours a day or more on it. :) Good luck with your dressers and nightstand!

If you have a really stubborn varnish to get through, I would recommend chemically stripping the wood. If you’re only planning on sanding the wood and not first stripping it, you’d better have some damn good equipment! If you just have a common orbital sander you’re going to wear yourself out and not get very far in the process. If you have a disk or a belt sander you’ll be able to remove the varnish a lot quicker, but then you have to be careful not to sand too deeply and ruin your piece. If your furniture has legs or any curved areas it can be hard to sand. You’ll only need to lightly sand the furniture after using a chemical stripper, and then it’ll be so smooth you’ll want to get naked and wiggle on it! Well, maybe not… but you get the idea. Look for a chemical stripper that says “no clean-up” or washes clean with water. Definitely wear gloves and a mask.
