I have done this to some wardrobes. Just give them a good sanding then use a primer and undercoat before painting

in diy stores you need a product called makes paint stick and there are many some for melamine some for steel ect its supposed to be excelent according to the diy programmes

You could spray them with car paint , its very tough and gives a beautiful finish unlike a brush , you get primmer spray too.

if the surface is shiny and smooth with no blemishes or lumps then chances are then it will be melamine. you will have to prime the surface with a proprietry melamine primer (b&q etc)
    and paint with your colour.
remember if you spray paint it take your time and use several layers rather than one/two thick coats as this will help with knocks/chips etc.
if you use a brush and you want a pro finish then get a good brush, the better the brush the better the finish
